Are Adult Development courses required?
Yes! Good leadership is the key to good Girl Scouting. New Volunteer Orientation, Basic Leader Training and Age-Level training are required within six months of appointment as a leader. It is the policy of Girl Scouts of the USA and the Glowing Embers Council that all troop leaders and volunteers must take training. Also, by taking adult development courses, you will gain greater personal confidence and effectiveness as a role model for girls. |
|
Who teaches the courses?
Volunteer Girl Scout trainers with specialized skills and experiences offer most of the courses listed. Occasionally, some specialized classes may be taught by experts in a particular field.

Do I need to register for the class?
Yes! Registration is required. Training registration forms must be filled out completely and returned to the Kalamazoo Service Center by the registration deadline, one week prior to course delivery (unless otherwise noted). Class size is limited and we encourage early registration. All training plans and materials will be tailored to the number of registered volunteers. Courses with low registrations may be cancelled. |
|
What if I can’t attend after I have registered?
Please be sure to inform the Kalamazoo Service Center as early as possible if you cannot attend a course for which you are registered, so your space can be offered to another volunteer. Remember, course fees are non-refundable. If you call at least one week in advance to cancel, you will be issued a credit that you can use to register for another course. |
|
Are classes ever cancelled?
When a course is cancelled or rescheduled due to low enrollment, you will be notified at least two days prior to the course date. If inclement weather causes a cancellation, the trainer or a staff person will make every attempt to contact all registered participants. If the school district in the same geographic area as the training course cancels evening activities due to severe weather, Glowing Embers will also cancel evening trainings in that area.
Remember, course fees are non-refundable. In the event of a cancellation, you will be issued a credit that you can use to register for another course. |
|
What if I arrive late or depart early?
In order to have a successful training, it is important to be at the training on time. Excessive tardiness or early departures may result in not receiving credit for the training. |
|
What should I bring to class?
Don’t forget to bring your copy of Safety-Wise, Essentials of Girl Scouting and Age-Level Leader Handbook. You should also bring your training card, pen and paper. Feel free to bring a drink and snack. If you are attending an all-day training, bring a sack lunch. |
